Magic plays no part in the story at all, except perhaps in Ichabod Crane's imagination. The point of the story is that Ichabod, the supposedly learned teacher, is the most superstitious and gullible of all the characters. After hearing the tale of the headless horseman, Ichabod just knows the foul creature is following him home from the party. Every little noise and every brush of the wind tells him that he is not alone on the road home. Imagine his terror when he was confronted by a mysterious rider. But was that rider a supernatural being? Or was it someone playing a trick on the poor old schoolteacher? Who is to say? Visit the links below for more information.
