I already have a clear preference, so this is hard for me to answer objectively. I prefer Morte d'Arthur by far. The story that is told in this poem is one that is beautifully written and carefully tooled for effect. The author, though, clearly has a soft spot for Lancelot and without directly stating it lets Lancelot off of the hook, so to speak, for his torrid affair with his King's wife Guinevere. I find this problematic, but the poem is very direct and genuine in nature. Because it is a beautiful poem that is masterfully constructed, I am partial to it! Morte d'Arthur is not particularly heroic, really. It is more a look at the dynamic of human relationships and the dynamic of Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot. Posted by kwoo1213 on Oct 14, 2008. |
