Previously, Launcelot had been tricked into an affair with Elaine, the daughter of King Pelles. The child of that affair is Galahad. At the beginning of this book, there is a report that a sword has been found in a floating stone. The sword is engraved with a legend that the sword belongs to the best knight in the world, but there is also a warning that any man who tries to pull it out and fail, will suffer a serious wound from it later.
