The mighty king of primeval England, Uther Pendragon is on his deathbed and all the barons of England are up in arms trying to seize control of the kingdom. Just then Merlin the magician goes to the Archbishop of Canterbury - the spiritual head of the kingdom - and informs him that a great miracle is about to take place and advises  him to inform all the lords and barons to assemble on Christmas day. On their arrival they discover a stone and a sword lodged firmly in it. On this stone there is the legend: "WHOSO PULLETH OUT THIS SWORD FROM THIS STONE AND ANVIL IS DULY BORN KING OF ALL  ENGLAND."

Arhur who has been placed by Merlin under the care of a knight called Sir Ector succeeds in pulling out the sword from the anvil and as prophesied later becomes the king of the whole of England.
