Mandela's imprisonment did not prompt him to back down in his belief that apartheid was wrong and the government that supports it is inherently unjust. His willingness to serve as a symbol for every South African who wanted social, political, and ethical change is almost unparalleled. He endured torture and inhumane treatment while in prison for over three decades. Throughout this time, his popularity swelled amongst South Africans. It was powerful that the demand for change rose the longer Mandela was imprisoned. His release marked the end of apartheid and the beginning of a new South Africa. As his own book's title states, Mandela became a representative for a "Democratic, Nonracial South Africa." Mandela and his actions prove him to be a symbol for all people that seek to transform what is to what should be.
