Al Gore failed to win Tennessee in 2000. See the link for others.

Note that Polk and Nixon were the only candidates to win an election while losing their state of residence. (Nixon is identified more with California, which he won, than New York.)

In the first half of the 20th century, a major party Presidential nominee lost his home state 11 times!  Six of these were Democratic candidates, 5 Republican.  Since the war, 4 have lost their home states -- all Democrats:  Stevenson twice, McGovern and Gore.

Only two candidates have ever lost their home state and gone on to win the election:  Wilson and Polk.
