Police can ask about a patient and run a check on them. All they need is probable cause to investigate someone.

Police are permitted to do two kinds of background checks:  Standard and Enhanced Disclosures.

    Standard Disclosure
People in contact with children or vulnerable adults are usually asked to get this check, under the law as Exceptions Order to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974. This background check shows recxent and or past convictions. It also shows any formal  cautions or reprimands that may be on the Police National Computer.

Enhanced Disclosure:  This check is most often used for people who go for particular licensing and for judges seeking an appointment. Enhanced Disclosures include the same information as the Standard Disclosures but they may also contain any and all info. from the local police departments.
