Inherent in the ideology underlying the conquest and colonization of Latin America were certain factors that severely retarded the development of the novel there. Notable among them was the Church’s view that the novel form was harmful to morals, coupled with the vision of Latin America as a mission field, from which such negative influences could and should be excluded.
