I want to know when the novel "The Last of the Mohicans" by James Fenimore Cooper was published and when it was written.

    Just a few words to add to tthakker's answer.

    There is often confusion about the placement of "Last of the Mohicans" in the series as the five books are not written in chronological order.  

    To follow Natty's chronological path, one should read:  The Deerslayer, The Last of the Mochicans, The Pathfinder, The Pioneers and finally, The Praire.  The confusion is a result of "Pioneers" being the first written and released (1823), then "Mohicans" (1826); The Prairie (1827); The Pathfinder (1840) and finally, The Deerslayer (1841).
