    The people of Camelot react with fear and confusion as the  dead body of the Lady of Shalott floats into their view.  Her arrival draws a hush tone from the crowd.  They prayed for the dead Lady of Shallot.  Lancelot remarks that the lady has a beautiful face.

    "Who is this? And what is here?
    And in the lighted palace near
    Died the sound of royal cheer;
    And they crossed themselves for fear,
    All the Knights at Camelot;
    But Lancelot mused a little space
    He said, "She has a lovely face;
    God in his mercy lend her grace,
    The Lady of Shalott."
    (Tennyson)

    "In the first five lines of this stanza, the initial curiosity of the people of Camelot turns to fear, the primitive fear of seeing a dead person, and the way these Christian people respond in order to protect themselves when frightened is to make the sign of the cross."
