    The king is described as "semi-barbaric."  He is very distant and cold.  He cares about his laws and his position of king.  He feels superior to everyone.  When he finds out that his daughter is involved with a young man, he is furious and he condemns the man to choose between two doors.  When he is sitting on his throne to watch his judgement be carried out he is self-satisfied.
