The reader is left hanging about this question -- Yes, the princess motioned toward the right door, but we also know that she was very jealous, meaning she might have decided that it would be better for her love to die/ get eaten than to marry another woman.
The author here uses intentional ambiguity; that is, he forces the reader to decide for themselves the fate of the young suitor. We as an audience are left to figure out just what happened, and any answer could be correct, if properly justified. Did the princess love him enough to spare him, and see him marry a rival, or was she so covetous of his love that she directed him to certain death by tiger? It's up to you as the reader.
