In the beginning, Baba has a difficult time relating to Amir. They're so different from one another, and Hassan seems to be more like the son Baba expects than Amir is. Baba notices that it is Hassan who stands up to bullies and not Amir, and this upsets him. Amir is more like his mother, quiet, not the least bit athletic, and he loves to read. Amir constantly tries to impress his father, get his father's attention, and he is jealous of how Baba treats Hassan.  Bab is stern yet loving toward Amir, and Amir desperately wants to please him.

By the time they move to America, Baba works at a gas station so Amir can attend school, and he's proud that Amir is his son. He ends up respecting Amir for the man he becomes.
