The Pomegranate tree is important because it is a symbol of the friendship between Amir and Hassan.  Amir carves their names in the tree and tells Hassan that it is their tree.  Later in the story it is pointed out that the tree has not "born fruit in many years." Just as their friendship has not been alive for many years.

The story of "Rotsam and Sohrab" is important because this is the story that Amir always read to Hassan.  "It is a story of a great warrior Rostam and his fleet-footed horse.  Rostam mortally wounds his valiant nemesis, Sohrab, in battle, only to discover that Sohrab is his long-lost son."  Hassan names his son Sohrab after the character in the story.
