Twenty-six years beforehand, Amir planted money he had received for his birthday under Hassan's mattress to make it look as if he had stolen it. As a result both Hassan and his father chose to leave the family they had been with all of Hassan's life rather than live under shame.  And as Amir learns much later on, they were more "family" than he had ever realized - Hassan was his own half-brother.

'The Kite-runner' is a story of betrayal, but also of redemption. For when Amir leaves money for Farid's family by planting money under his mattress (which will be discovered only after he has gone), it shows that he has learned to help rather than hurt others, and at his own personal sacrifice. This is a crisis point, as from this time on Amir will continue to make sacrifices, especially those to save Sohrab, Hassan's son.
