The reader learns a lot about the background history of Afghanistan and the critical events in more recent history, particularly in terms of the Taliban. At the same time, the story bears themes on a more universal level, dealing with such subjects as rejection and acceptance, betrayal and forgiveness, and injustice and retribution.
