Amir loses his sense of awe for his father and even some respect once he learns the truth about his being also the father of Hassan. He feels betrayed for being held in the dark all his childhood and learns too late that Hassan is his half-brother. However, once he does, Amir better understands his father's relationship to Hassan as he was growing up under their same roof in guise of being simply his servant's son.

When they both flee to the United States and start life over "from scratch," Amir learns to respect Baba in other ways. He realises his father's weaknesses and accepts him more as a person and not just as an authority figure. In return, Baba also shows more paternal interest in Amir than ever before when, in failing health, he arranges Amir's marriage with Soraya. His physical vulnerability makes him all the more disarming, and just before his death, Baba is truly at peace with himself and his son.
