In my opinion, Amir's greatest sin was jealousy (and pride), in that his jealousy of Hassan blinded him to Hassan's essential goodness as a person, but also to the young boy's physical handicap. A truly altruistic person would have had empathy and compassion for Hassan, but Amir, who knows he does not deserve his father's admiration, nonetheless battles Hassan for Amir's father's attention. The final act of betrayal that causes the break between Hassan and Amir, when he abandons someone who has been nothing but loyal to him, is heartbreaking, and although it is only alluded to, would have broken Hassan's heart. So, ultimately, Amir is guilty of many things, many sins against Hassan, but all of them stem from his intense jealousy. Posted by rhetorike on Jul 30, 2008. |
