   The island is located in the Caribbean. According to Whitney, it has a very ominous history, earning it the name of "Ship-Trap Island" and when we meet Zaroff, we learn why (he has a series of lights that signal to passing ships that there is a channel through which they can pass. Of course, there isn't and the ships crash, thereby supplying Zaroff with his most dangerous of game). The island itself has jungle and dangerous swamps as well as rugged coastline, where Rainsford makes his escape.
