Posted by ms-mcgregor on Wednesday September 3, 2008 at 2:11 PMIn Act 1, Scene 1, we see the selfish attempt of Lear to buy his daughters’ love with material possessions; however, he is blind to the fact that one cannot manipulate true affection. He cannot see that both Regan and Goneril are merely manipulating him and telling him what he wants to hear. He expects to keep his title and all the honors and official privileges and powers inherent in that title, while his daughters do all the work that goes along with the title. This illusion will later haunt him as he is driven out to face the reality of the storm with only his Fool to keep him company.
