The main ideas or themes in the book are centered on the human condition. One is that written documents and accounts cannot fully describe and represent the horror and degradation of the slave experience. To put into words the lives of the slaves limits the reality of the tragedy. Survival is shown to be inherent in all humans, it just manifests itself in different forms. Slaves must quiet their rage at times, enduring inhuman conditions, just to survive another day. This repression allows the slave a new opportunity to escape the horrors of slavery.

Humans are also bound by their differences, as well as their similarities. The outcasts of society stick together because they do not fit in in the mainstream. Kevin and Dana feel out of place in both the past and the present.
