Karel Čapek, who earned his living as a journalist, is best known for his futuristic drama, R.U.R.: Rossum’s Universal Robots (with Josef Čapek, 1921; English translation, 1923), which brought into the language the word “robot,” coined by his brother Josef. Besides his collections of short stories, Čapek published seven novels and a book of travel sketches. Six of his plays were produced.
