Juvenile Crime | Juvenile Crime Is Not a Serious Problem in Schools

Long before the Columbine tragedy in April 1999, there was great concern for the safety of students at the high school where I teach, T.C. Williams in Alexandria, Virginia. The parents of my affluent students were often asked how they could risk sending their children to such a dangerous place.

Students of mine who had transferred in from private schools were warned by teachers and classmates alike about the violence they would encounter in our hallways and bathrooms. When our football team traveled to suburban schools, the police presence usually was increased.
