Through the two women, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters, we are informed that Minnie Wright killed her own husband.  She strangled him because he was "strangling" her life.  They believe that only a distracted woman would leave her house in such disarray. Minnie's kitchen was messy and unkempt.  Her stitching was no complete in her quilting.  The one key element that helped them to see the truth was that John had killed Minnie's poor little bird.  That must have been the end of it for her.  She snapped and she killed him.  He took the one thing that she enjoyed (music--and she used to sing in the choir, too) and destroyed it.  She was so distracted in everything else from that point on.  She killed her husband, but the men don't see the signs that the two women do.  So they hide that evidence so that Minnie cannot be convicted.
