    In "The Jungle," by Upton Sinclair, we follow the experiences of Jurgis Rudkus and his family in the United States.  The basic story is that the whole family gets pretty much destroyed by the economic system of the United States of the early 1900s.

    So why did Jurgis and the others come to America?  What drove them to come and suffer as they have?  It is this information that is provided by the flashback to Lithuania.  We find out that the father of Ona (who marries Jurgis) dies, leaving his family in debt and causing them to lose their farm.  Because of this misfortune, they decide to leave for America.
