In "The Jungle," how does the relationship between Jurgis and Ona evolve and why?

    Ona represents home to Jurgis.  They come from Lithuania together, hoping to start a new life.  It is clear that Jurgis cares a great deal for her because he carries her to work through the snow, he provides a home for her, and he even goes to jail for her.  Ona (and by extension Antanas) is the representation of what America is to Jurgis.  When he loses them, he loses his meaning in life.
