THE JUNGLE BOOKS were originally published a year apart as THE JUNGLE BOOK and THE SECOND JUNGLE BOOK but are now usually printed in one volume. The legend of the hero brought up by animals goes back to ancient times, and has been used more recently by Edgar Rice Burroughs in his Tarzan books. Thus, the Mowgli stories have deep roots. Mowgli, however, is a far more authentic character than Tarzan; his jungle world and its animal inhabitants are more fully imagined.
