Once inside, the Conspirators gather around him pretending to plead a case for an exile's return. The Conspirators kneel;Casca is the first to stand up and strike Caesar. The others follow suit. Caesar, in shock says to Brutus, "Et tu, Brute" (3.1.85), and he dies. It is decided that Brutus will go to the pulpit to speak to the people;Antony has fled to his house horrified at the Conspirators' actions. Brutus tells the other Conspirators to bathe their hands and swords with Caesar's blood and go to the marketplace and follow Brutus, shouting "Peace, freedom, and liberty!" (3.1.122) as Brutus believes the assassination was for the good of Rome. The servant enters bringing the message from Mark Antony that Antony will follow Brutus. We know later that is not at all what is on Antony's mind!
