    The Joy Luck Club was originally started as a gathering of four women to play mah jong and "to raise money and to raise [their] spirits." The women had these weekly parties to escape if ever so briefly the horrible reality that they saw day to day. "What was worse...to sit and wait for our own deaths...or to choose our own happiness?" With a war going on and death everywhere, these women used their weekly meetings to take a break from reality.
