The entire incident with Lindo and Ying-Ying being deceived by the Huangs and by the farce that the family offers so that their son, Tyan-yu  marries Lindo served the mother and daughter to realize that the surface of others dragged their dreams and hopes away. Tyan-yu was presented to them as a hope for a better life, and as protection for Lindo. In fact, Tyan-yu was probably gay, and the family was not rich at all, treated Lindo horribly and nearly drive her to suicide. These traditional views of men as protectors and providers were wiped out entirely from the hearts of these women, and helped them realize the harsh reality of social situation of Asian women during the times of the war
