Issei is a term that refers to a person born in Japan who immigrated to America. It means first generation, from the root word ichi, which means one. Nisei, derived from the root ni, meaning two, refers to the second generation, which would be the children born in America to the Issei.  Sansei, derived from the root word san, meaning three, is the third generation, the children born to the Nisei.
