John O’Hara is probably best known to American readers for his long, complex novels of manners, liberally spiced with sex and seasoned with class conflict. Most of his stories are set in that coal-mining region of Pennsylvania known as The Region by its inhabitants, an O’Hara domain which was ruled, at least fictionally, by the city of Gibbsville.
