Loomis did have a loss of faith for a little while. Loomis was trying to find himself, his life was that of a preacher and a deacon of the chruch back in Tenn. but now he has changed. Once Joe Turner captured him and made him a slave he was taken from his wife and child and all he wanted to do was to see his wife and child. After the seven years of being Turner's slave he was set free and all he wanted to do was to see his child and wife, when he went back to find then his wife had left and his child was with her grandmother. Now, traveling the roads North, Loomis has finally come into Seth and Bertha's house and finds who he is looking for after two weeks. His loss of self control and his speaking in tongues and everything seems like a loss of self and a complete break down. Why he cut himself, thats up to stipulation BUT I figure he needed that physical release of pain to finally get rid of the mental pain he had been carring around for so long. He thinks he can start his life over now that he has given his child back to her mother and said goodbye to Martha, but one will never know that. Hope this answers your question.. somewhat at least.
