   This is by far one of the best questions that can be asked with this story so many people think that the Jilting is just when George stands Granny Weatherall up at the Wedding. The Jilting is so much more. Granny Weatherall was cheating on John with George, she wanted to be with George. After Weatherall got pregnant by George the decided to get rid of John. John was killed and now George could be with Weatherall but partly because Cornelia died George stood up Weatherall and is now regretting everything that she did.

   The memory that was most painful to Granny was the day she was jilted by George "...since the day the wedding cake was not cut, but thrown out and wasted."  Granny, Ellen, felt like the world had dropped out beneath her, "there she was blind and sweating with nothing under her feet and the walls falling away."  On that day she felt as if she was in hell, and now when she thinks of him "the thought of him was a smoky cloud from hell that moved and crept in her head."
