Still, her mind goes back to the event 60 years earlier when she was left at the altar, a jilted bride. This seems to be her reality- it's where she is mentally even though she is past it physically. It's an unresolved issue.
Although Granny insists to her "young" doctor that she is "fine", it is quite obvious that she is in denial. Denial is her reality. She has denied the pain and her being stuck at the jilting some sixty years later.
This is a story that often taks several readings and a close look at the author's word choice to grasp its full meaning. It is easy to see this story in overly simplistic terms if we do not examine it closely.
