The last line of the story depicts Granny's death, "She stretched herself with a deep breath and blew out the light." Granny is a woman, who even as she is dying, denies that she is dying.  She has lied to herself for years, pretending to be happy with her life.  She lies to herself when she says that she has already said her good-by's by having made trips to see all her family 20 years ago.  She's even trying to convince herself that tomorrow she will be and about cleaning her house.  The reality is that she is not dying happily and peacefully.  As she lay in bed, near death, the hurts she suffered in life, particularly the jilting by George, prey on her mind.  Death does not bring a final peace or acceptance; it merely brings the end, the cessation of light.
