Educated at universities in Ottawa and Paris, Jeanne Sauvé had distinguished careers as both a journalist and a politician. She worked for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), served as president of the Canadian Institute of Public Affairs, and was elected to Parliament in 1972. She served as secretary of state for science and technology, minister of environment, and minister of communications. After a term as speaker of the House of Commons from 1980 to 1984, Sauvé was named governor-general of Canada. While in office, she maintained her position as an outspoken advocate of women’s rights.
