Jean Racine’s reputation rests on a relatively limited dramatic œuvre. Nevertheless, Racine published a number of other works during his literary career. Among these are several odes celebrating Louis XIV in the early 1660’s; a polemical letter attacking his Jansenist mentors in 1666; a collection of religious poems, Cantiques spirituels (1694); and an unfinished defense of the Jansenists, Abrégé de l’histoire de Port-Royal (1742, 1767).
