Whom does the story focus on? Whom does it open with? Whom does it close with? Even though there are two men in the story, we know more about one of them than the other. And what we do learn about the minor character serves to increase our understanding of the protagonist. So whom do you think the protagonist is?

Ironically, the neighbor, Mr. Tandram, is almost exactly like Mr. Nilson. Neither men is able to truly appreciate the beauty of the quince tree and both seem to be stuck in a well-ordered but bland world. Unfortunately, Mr. Nilson doesn't recognize his own similarities with his neighbor and continues his rather meaningless existence in spite of the beauty around him.
