Galsworthy's first works can be seen as studies or apprentice work, and perhaps for this reason he published his first works under the pseudonym John Sinjohn. Significantly, after his father's death in 1904, Galsworthy began publishing under his own name. The Man of Property, the first novel in his acclaimed Forsyte Saga, was published in 1906; and the year also saw the critical and commercial success of his play The Silver Box.
