Origins
In Japan, the earliest text that shows essential characteristics of long fiction is the Kojiki (712 c.e.; Records of Ancient Matters, 1882, 1968). Presented to the Japanese imperial court shortly after the establishment of the first permanent capital in 710 c.e., in what is now called the city of Nara, Records of Ancient Matters was compiled from narratives that traditional storytellers had handed down.
