    There are two stories.  One is that his mother wanted him to marry the woman that would eventually be the crazy cat woman.  So the two have a long history not revealed until her stroke.  

     The second, and perhaps most significant to Louise, is that her grandmother, as a young girl, had an unrequited crush on him.  Though she married and had a full life with a loving family, she never forgot those feelings.  He on the other hand was too old to notice her at the time.  It accounts for the vehemence in her treatment of him.
