Jacob Have I Loved Group
Question:
What happens in chapters 14-20 of "Jacob Have I Loved"?
I would mainly like to know things like how Captain Wallace ignores Rass customs and why Louise is so suprised when Call marries Caroline.

However, if you're pressed for time, you can find a brief summary of the book at the Library of Congress web site (link pasted below). You can also visit Katherine Paterson's official web page (link pasted below).
As to your specific questions: Louise and Call are friends, and Louise is jealous of her sister, Caroline. So she is stunned when he good friend decides to marry someone whom Louise considers to be "vain, selfish, and overly demanding on the family for financial and emotional support" (see the eNotes article on Themes and Characters). Captain Wallace represents the worldly side of life in the strictly religious community. He plays cards; he causes the young people not to "honor" their elders by financing their education or by encouraging them to leave Rass Island.
