It is difficult to compare other Paterson novels to Jacob Have I Loved, a novel primarily concerned with adolescence but extending into the protagonist's adulthood. But familial relations, Christian regeneration, and elements of symbolic romance are important in other Paterson novels. The competition for parental attention can be seen among the Aarons children of Bridge to Terabithia, between William Ernest and Gilly in The Great Gilly Hopkins, and even between Kinshi and Jiro in The Master Puppeteer.
