Karana and her brother Ramo had a job to do - collecting roots for the village meal - when she noticed the ship. Ramo, like any small child, was excitable and easily distracted, and Karana knew that once he was aware of the vessel's approach, he would stop working and run off immediately to tell the villagers. Since she needed his help, she went on digging as if nothing special was happening. Even though she was excited too, she knew their job was important, and she wanted to finish it first.
