Now to all who think we’ve very recently entered a new age, the age of terrorism—where innocent civilians have suddenly become victims of terrorist attacks—I have a simple question: what are the civilians so afraid of in Lord Byron’s following evocation of battle?

“And near, the beat of the alarming drum / Roused up the soldier ere the Morning Star; / While thronged the citizens with terror dumb, / Or whispering with white lips—‘The foe! They come! They come!’”
