The narrator has worked his way up in the Brotherhood to where he is used to being included and "in the loop". When the Brotherhood begins to lose its grip on the community and brothers start disappearing, they become more selective as to whom they invite and inform about certain issues. The narrator does not relish the feeling of being left out and living on the fringes of both society and the Brotherhood which he loved and identified with so strongly.
