The message in the narrator's hibernation is that like a sleeping bear, one day the black man will awaken. When he does, he will be a force to be reckoned with. Sleep can only last for so long. The winter will end. The message is therefore a hopeful one.

“Call me Jack-the-Bear, for I am in a state of hibernation” (6). “The truth is the light and light is the truth (7). In his hole, “There are exactly 1,369 lights” (7). The square root of 1,369 is 13, a prime number. Identifying 13 as a prime number is important: 13 is only divisible by itself indicating the only way to seek truth is through enlightenment. The analogy “hibernation” is a metaphor for the protagonist state of contemplation. Only through contemplation can the protagonist decide what to do when he awakens from his den.
