The Story:
The stranger arrived at Bramblehurst railway station on a cold, snowy day in February. Carrying a valise, he trudged through driving snow to Iping, where he stumbled into the Coach and Horses Inn and asked Mrs. Hall, the hostess, for a room and a fire. The stranger’s face was hidden by dark blue spectacles and bushy sideburns.
He had dinner in his room. When Mrs. Hall took a mustard jar up to him, she saw that the stranger’s head was completely bandaged. While she was in his room, he covered his mouth and chin with a napkin.
