The Story:
On a cold afternoon in November, Chick Mallison, twelve years old, accompanied by two black boys, went rabbit hunting on Carothers Edmonds’ place. When he fell through the ice into a creek, an old black man, Lucas Beauchamp, appeared and watched while the boy clambered awkwardly ashore. Then Lucas took the white boy and his companions to his home. There, Chick dried out in front of the fire and ate Lucas’ food. Later, when Chick tried to pay the old man for his hospitality, Lucas spurned his money. Chick threw it down, but Lucas made one of the other boys pick it...
